When I recently learned that ubuntu had appointed a new COO, I was quite optimistic that a big push would be coming to clean up the little useability nits that still stand in the way of ubuntu becoming mainsteam, as well as perhaps some enhanced marketing.
Reading today's Slashdot article, I see that the initial impression by the Slashdot crowd of Matt Asay was not very positive. See -
http://interviews.slashdot.org/story/10/03/02/186206/Matt-Asay-Answers-Your-Questions-About-Ubuntu-and-Canonical?art_pos=8
I know that Slashdot can be a tough crowd. It seems like the major gripes were gaming and KDE, neither of which interest me very much.
Is Matt Asay's appointment a good thing for ubuntu? I am still hopeful. Beth Lynn's bet is not specific to ubuntu, but it seemed to be the most likely distro to push her over the finish line.

Sorry, to take away you’re fun but safari and opera are not open source they are proprietary software, so should be added to the other proprietary software like IE, proprietary software still is well over 50% of browsers in use.

After all the time you've spent commenting, one would think you'd be familiar with the premise of this blog, which is that Microsoft's market share will be less than 50% on June 30, 2011.

Woah Darryl, one bet at a time!

Beth Lynn is only reporting open source's progress against one entity right now: Microsoft. She's never made any other claim here.

The competition is a good thing, whether or not it's free, open-source, or proprietary software. I don't want to see Microsoft fail as much as I want to see better software alternatives succeed. I personally think open source is the means, and I think software freedom has value beyond the four freedoms, but never beyond human freedom.

Total software freedom is an aspiration that we as individuals can work to attain. Giving Microsoft a run for its money is something we can all enjoy together!

"As far as browsers go, the “what will we use” question has been answered: Open source browsers such as Firefox and Chrome seem to be taking Microsoft’s market share. GandhiCon 4 here we come."

Sorry, to take away you're fun but safari and opera are not open source they are proprietary software, so should be added to the other proprietary software like IE, therefore proprietary software still is well over 50% of browsers in use.

Not being accurate in reporting is a big thing on the internet, It appears to happen alot from the "open source" people, especially when they are trying to attack Microsoft.

but lets face some REAL facts next time when you make sweeping statements, and consider some people (like myself) might actually check you're statements, it should not be so easy to prove you're again not quite being totally honest..

How's that bet of you're going, willing to take me up on my offer ?? yet..

[...] One neighborhood changing the world part one Why would people be so giving? The foundation of open source is belonging. Everyone to the hardest working contributor to the new user is equally entitled to their license. You do not need to pay thousands of dollars, go to a certain school, work for the right employer, or live in the right country. Open source is a free gift to all. Like grace, those who receive it want to share it. We stand together as neighbors living everywhere changing the world where we live. [...]

[...] One neighborhood changing the world part two Open source is not just a methodology for releasing software for people like Helios and I. It is a way of life that we pay for by giving back in abundance with the resources we have to our avail. You scream fake by
A. never using your legal name online
B. offering to abuse ebay
C. insisting there is no risk in a too good to be true 1-3 international transaction
D. saying you are not scamming me several times in the same post
E. claiming that I need to "shut up" because I refuse to enter any agreements with you
F. implying you have a social security number yet Australians call the national id number a "Tax File Number"
G. being completely unable to grasp simple English grammar such as the difference between "your", a possessive, and "you're", a contraction of "you" and "are."
H. refusing to use spell check

Sorry, you can not shut down every site you call a FUDfest with your hollow offers. You can buy the domain whatwillweuse.com from me. My price is 15 million USD.
