Giving someone a desktop is a moving experience. I’ve done it hundreds of times. It was my job to deploy desktops with Red Hat or Fedora 2000-2006 for Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science. There, some of the brightest minds would be there to receive it. Here are a few that you might know…

Scott Falhman, the first person to type to denote a smile.

The late Randy Pausch, of “the last lecture” and the open source children’s programming teacher alice.org

Dave Touretzky, who testified before Congress to assert that computer code that would decrypt DVDs was 1st amendment protected free speech.

Giving a desktop to these folks or any of their grad students was never a leap of faith. Everyone was highly intelligent and capable of great things. Even so, if I saw a meaningful project scrounging, I would do my best to give them a nice desktop that a richer project had walked away from. One such grad student of project that seemed high on productivity and low on funds circa 2005 was Luis von Anh. As it turned out, he using hardware that would have otherwise been discarded to build Captcha. That’s right, that little English-word based puzzle you need to solve to submit a webform was invented on Fedora would-have-been-trash desktops.

I thought that I was putting Linux in the hands of the most influential hands in computing. One of them, with all of the resources to their avail, would surely develop that killer application that would have everyone leaving Microsoft in droves.

Now, I believe someone else to be far more influential. He does not have a doctorate or an office funded by the Bill and Melinda Foundation like most Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science faculty.

Instead he has a simple mission…

A child’s exposure to technology should never be predicated on an ability to afford it.

Linux is a gift-based economy or “meritocracy.”

The rules are as such….

You make a meaningful contribution by committing some work. The community sees this work and benefits from it. The more work you put out there that helps people, the more the community will want to support you. Social capital is another term for this support. Eric S Raymond described the mechanics of this well in the“How to Become a Hacker” essay. Heck, Jono Bacon, Ubuntu Community Manager, wrote a whole book on how contributions work called The Art of Community.

Good and meaningful contributions are not to be marginalized. Commitments are gifts that come in many different forms like code, documentation, public relations, administration, technical support, and even hospitality. These gifts come from people from all walks of life. Elitism has no place in meritocracy. This is why Moose and I wrote an essay called Open Source Should Be Open To All.

What is my contribution? This blog, the Ohio Linuxfest, countless user group events, hundreds of Linux desktops I have personally deployed, freelinuxbox.org, and the thousands of Linux systems I support professionally or on a volunteer basis. Not bad for one woman.

The buzz this morning is Apple’s stock out-valuing Microsoft’s stock. Even CNN is covering it. Please, if someone has any videos on this story, leave me a comment.

Apple’s profitability and Microsoft’s lack-there-of is not news to me. During the Christmas shopping season 2009 I blogged about the popularity of Apple products through the Apple store. As of November 2009, 48 cents of every PC sold goes to Apple. Today, only highlights and fuels the momentum I saw 6 moths ago.

With the stock prices realizing Apple’s success and Microsoft’s failure, The New York Times takes notice today.

Apple, the maker of iPods, iPhones and iPads, shot past Microsoft on May 26, 2010, supplanting the computer software giant as the world’s most valuable technology company.

Full story with Ballmer/Jobs graph on New York Times website.

Apple, with their SOLD out World Wide Developer Conference next week, has all the tools they need to put Microsoft away.

See how this is coming together folks?

Come June 30, 2011, Microsoft Windows will lack majority desktop market share.

Today, Oracle owns all of the IP which Mr. Schwartz claims has the power to shutup Gates, Ballmer, and Jobs.

Will we use Oracle products instead of Microsoft products when Microsoft lacks marjority marketshare?!?

Stay tuned to whatwillweuse.com for the answer.
